About Kyphoplasty Surgery - What to Expect:

Preparation

Prior to the kyphoplasty procedure, you will be asked to fast for several hours before the surgery. Standard labs and EKG will be check prior to the day of the procedure.

Procedure

During the kyphoplasty procedure, you'll be under a mild/moderate sedation and the skin in the back will be completely numbed with local anesthetic. A small incision (5mm) and a narrow tube is guided into the fracture bone. A specialized balloon is then inflated within the fractured vertebra, creating a cavity. The balloon is deflated and removed, and the cavity is filled with a bone cement to stabilize the vertebra, which leads to immediate pain relief in most cases.

Recovery

The procedure usually takes about 45 minutes per fracture treated, and patients go home the same day. You'll be monitored for any complications, and pain relief is generally immediate. Some mild incisional pain and soreness is to be expected. Skin incisions are closed with a waterproof skin glue or steri-strips. Bathing can be resumed by the next day.

Follow-Up

Post-operative care includes ensuring the patient receives any support they need including home health services such as home nursing or home physical therapy.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in recovery after kyphoplasty, targeting any remaining physical limitations and challenges. It helps patients rebuild strength, improve flexibility, and regain confidence. A tailored physical therapy program can accelerate healing, lower the risk of future complications, and enhance overall quality of life. If you or a loved one has had kyphoplasty, consult your back pain specialist about the advantages of physical therapy and take the next step toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.
